I found this morning that my son had put some dog poop in the aquarium. Will this cause any major harm? I am doing a good cleaning in the morning.

lol maybe he wanted some sweet new corals. it will raise your ammonia levels for sure but i think if you put new carbon in and make sure u get it all out ull be ok

OK, the carbon is part of my aquarium maintance. I am going to do a 20% water change as well and vacuum out the substrate and do some prime as well.

good grief, how old is your son?! Old enough to go out alone but young enough to walk around with dog poop and not think anything of it, LOL.
I'm not really sure I woulda shared THAT experience. Haha!!!

He is actually only 6 and it was poop from the puppy. Why not share it and take care of the problem before it kills all of the fish.....

this just shows that even if you have prepared and thought of all the different scenarios in out tanks there is always something new that could happen.
I would just watch the water parameters and as you siad a water change. I wouldnt dig into the substrate though it may end up causeing you more problems in the long run.
I would however take the time with the kiddo on putting things in the tank. this time it may not do any damage but if he put something like soap or any type of inert chemical it could have massive effects in the tank.

I'm thinking there are more important things we should be teaching the child...
HOBrien, I hope you understand, I am chuckling as I read this thread. If I came across rude, I apologize. I have the 6 year old, and the 4 year old, so I think I can understand. But I still think it's kinda funny. I can see the child now, walking through the house, poop in hand, heading for the fish tank cause for that poopage to find it's way into dad's tank would be the ultimate achievement, lol.
I think your tank will be fine. Well, unless your dog drinks tap!

Kidding...
Good luck, and as you already know, a water change is in order...

Did the "stuff" fall apart, and sink to the bottom. Or did it just stay together and float? (there is a purpose to the awnser! haha)
If you got all of it out i would just do a couple water changes and monitor the ammonia pretty closely.

Ok things are done poop is fully out and a 50% water change has been done, Added some prime, and some Ich preventive treatment stuff.
To who ever asked how it was is it was still in contact but had sunk.
Also to the one chuckling that has a 6 and 4 yr old....My sons are those ages as well. The poop was actually in there room becuase that is the only place the pup poops. So he just had to go to the next room to the tank.
Thank you all who gave some input

glad that everything worked out it could have been much worse than it was.

Okay I believe the poop story. I have a 5 year old. Last summer I caught him with an empty shampoo sample in the tank. He was taking water in and out with it. YIKES! I didn't lose any fish but I was lucky. He also overfed my gold fish tank to the point of having orange water. Yep, they lived too! He leaves my tanks alone now. PHEW!

See I was just like all of yall and couldnt believe it until I smelt it. Also I laughed to myself as well because the kiddos didnt need to see me laughing about it. They did get a sturn talking to becuase at the same time they did that they put rubberbands in the tank as well.......All the rubberbands were accounted for when I pulled them out.
Again thanks to everyone and glad I could hand out a few laughs.

I am glad that you got everything out. I hate when the kids catch you laughing. It is so hard not to though sometimes
