Dog with broken tail?

Anyone ever had a dog injure or break their tail?
Our dog started whining on the way home from the lake yesterday and he acted like it bothered him to sit on his butt. When we got home he was runnign around with his tail between his legs. He won't sit on his butt and he won't let anyone mess with his tail.
Anyone had this happen to their dog? If so what was the prognosis? Did the tail heal on it's own or did you have to go to the vet?
I've heard dogs can "sprain" their tail. I'm hoping that's all this is.
Our vet can't see him until tomorrow. He's acting as if he's in pain.
Is there any kind of pain killer you can give a dog?

Poor fella.
I've heard of giving aspirin to dogs, but have never done it myself and wouldn't without a vet's approval.
If you can check around back there for a thorn or a bite or sting like bigarn suggested. Other than that, it's all up to the vet.

Well I tried "inspecting" his tail last night and he tried biting me.

It's not like him to be like that so I figure it's hurting him pretty badly.
He walks around fine but he won't sit and he won't wag his tail. He did act a little better this morning but not good.
I called the vet and they can't see him until tomorrow.

Poor little guy. I hope he just aggrevated something and didn't do any real damage...

I have def seen a dog with a broken tail and it is so sad.... If it is a bone break then there is probably some swelling so I think that would call for some ibuprophen. Give him a child's dose depending on his weight

Thanks for the link Adairable. I might have to try that tonight if he's still in obvious pain. There isn't any swelling or deformity of the tail so I'm hoping he just bruised it or something like that.
My wife ran home on lunch to check on him so hopefully he's doing better...

lol..i put a KegTub infront of my bedroom door to keep my Dalmatian out...and she like to leap vertically, well she did, and she landed inside of the tub, "spraining" her tail. It couldn’t have been broken, because she walked around with it between her legs. and she did wag her tail, but when she realized that it hurt too much to do it she stopped.
this went on for 2 weeks...gave her a aspirin 2 times a day, and after the 3rd week, she was back to the vertical leap and wagging her tail/butt so hard she almost falls some times.
she never sat, did a strange stance when poopin, and basicaly was a big baby. She didn let anyone go near her tail either...but my little brother(+350 6'7") and i(+280 6'5") held her down to make sure nothing was broke.

I might end up in a ditch face down after getting a soon to be vet bill.

Wife says the dog is about the same, still lathargic and uninterested in playing with the puppy.
Baloo6969 my dog does the same 3 foot vertical jump so maybe this is how this happened.
Adairable he's a 4 year old mutt brand dog we got from the city pound as a puppy. He's a little hyper but all in all a very good and smart dog.

and they are usually more intelligent....I think it has to do with the crazy puppy factories and inbreeding that is involved with pure-breds. And this is not a hit at anyone will a pure-bred, especially if you made sure to research your breeder!

don’t take it to the vet...it wont die because of a broken tail, and since it has it's tail between it's legs, it's a sure sign it's not broken...it's just in pain.
Obviously it is lethargic and doesn’t want to play with a puppy...would you want to go play catch with you kid if you just took a fast ball to your boys? Give it some time, or some aspirin. Don’t go paying someone to tell you something that is obvious…your dog will live.
