Judging by what you posted in your post, it sounds like you caused the heater to explode and the puffer to die..

All heaters should sit in the water for 30 minutes before being plugged in..

Sorry to hear about your loss.
We've found Stealth heaters to be the most reliable at least for us. We've had a few glass ones, Reno's etc but Stealth still works the best.

Why should heaters sit in the water for 30 minutes before you plug them in?

no clue man its something a buddy of mine told me to do years ago. i just read the package from top to bottom front and back and there is nothing stated that it has to be in the water for 30 mins before being turned on thou

from were the glass blew out it was infront of a heating coil. it took out a 2- 2 1/2 in chunk of glass well below the water line

Heaters should be in the water for AT LEAST 30 mins. Putting the heater in the tank, therefore changing the heater's glass temp rapidly stresses the glass, and if you turn on the heater, this adds to that stress.

i am never a fan of glass heater for this reason. i like the black plastic stealth heater the best. i never wait 30 minutes with mine. i'd plug in mine immediately when heating my new water during water change. i hv never had any issue.

Agree on the Stealth heaters! I have used a number of heaters in both fresh and saltwater over the years, but the Stealth heaters have been pretty much the best!
