make sure you research everything before you buy it, or the chances are good one day you'll come home with a really cute sweetlips for your 20G tank and then find out later its going to get MASSIVE. or you'll throw in something that eats something else you like.
research first, buy later.

I could not agree more. It is hard to resist the impulse. We are ALL aware of the temptation of a beautiful, juvenile, fish that would look so great in the display. The people at the LFS may try to talk you into it. Be aware of what you are buying.

Especially because fish can be very delicate. Matt2364 has impulse bought 2 fish that were extremely hard to keep as a species. Naturally the LFS didn't say anything of the sort even though they are a really great store they can sometimes mess up.

Well, you cannot completely blame the store. They have a business to run too. They are apt to tell people that species can live in a tank, and hope for the best. Others flat out lie. That is why you have to do your own research.

and before you go to your LFS be sure to check you parameters at home, you don't want to put an already stressed out fish into a tank thats parameters are out of whack.

Absolutely
It is important to always check your readings.

So true. I impulse bought a mandarin because she was so pretty, but the guy pointed her out and talked me into it first, as my first fish.
Now I know better.

i impulse bought and traded coral that i could not take care of, and had to realize that i could not take care of it, and either sell it or trade it. You lose money faster when you do stupid things!

Funny thing is... Most of the things that die or don't do well in your tank are all the things you bought on impulse! I can't think of one thing that I researched well that did poorly. You 'do' lose lots of money in the end, ...all on impulse buys generally.

what a great observation, I didnt even think of it that way. most of the things that I lost in the beggining of this hobby, for me, were the impulse buys.

Another shopper at my LFS bought a SEA APPLE in PHX,Az petstore the salesman told him it would be fine in his tank no problem. It was fine till one fish checked him out,,,,then a cloud of death consumed the tank, and everything in it. I told him about this site and all the great help I got here,, in perticular the avoid section.

I have had bad luck and a couple of lucky breaks from impulse buys. Good advise, if you like a fish/coral. Ask them to hold it for you, go home look it up and come back if you are still in love.

And look at a compatibility chart to see if it will go good with what you have..
Sorry had to remove. do not know why but per mike can not have.......
It is from another site. I recognized it as soon as I saw it earlier.

I saw a barrucada yesterday at the lfs which made me kinda sad because I know someone will come along and see only a small 2" cool loooking fish and decide to take it home only to later realize what kinda of monster it will become.
