Drain size/ flow?

Using 1 1/2" drain shouldn't matter, not much real increase over using 1 1/4" for the drain. I would though however match my overflows the same. The 1 1/2" will just consume more room inside the overflow. That might be critical depending on standpipe an design.
On a side note the rate of flow over the overflow won't really dictate noise from the overflow itself. Where you pick the noise up is from the distance/height the water is dropping into the overflow.

Standpipe? Design? Have you seen my 65 gallon. It's a top corner overflow just big enough to house a drain and strainer. I planned on making just one overflow, with two drains in it on the 125 just a bigger overflow. I went quick and simple with my 65 as it had fish, water, and corals in it when I drilled it. Isn't really any noise to it.

Thanks for the pics.....Being that the 125 is empty I'm assuming????
Nothing wrong with the 65 setup you did....I would look and search over on the other big forum and before you drill I'd look at making a standpipe, and they do exist and have been used just as you have your 65 drilled......It will help efficiency, and on top of that will quiet the noise of the water falling....The distance doesn't seem bad, but water still falling does make noise. The standpipe would raise the water level in the overflow box just a bit.....JMHO......

I have made some standpipes in my days, I guess I could have added an elbow and stainer, but I had a threaded bulkhead on that one, so there was no getting a 90 elbow inside there. This tank is in my bedroom and I really don't hear it. Or it doesn't bug me. Usually always have a fan running anyway. The skimmer bugs my wife, but not me. I know there are tons of ways to set up tanks, and such, but the main idea is to keep the debri in suspension and skim the surface water in a nut shell right?
Yes, the 125 is empty right now, hoping someone will buy it from me before I start working on it, and work more on my 65 that is set up. I have looked at tons of different designs, herbies, durso, no overflows, teeth, toothless, weird setups, etc.
