also, and i dont know if anyone can really answer this: if i have 2 drains near the center of tank, and a return in each corner, how would the split in the return line affect the flow? i guess the split would have to be the same distance from each bulkhead so the flows are equal, and the valve would be between the return pump and split. would this make more sense than a closed loop?
I would have your drains further out than in the center. That way you have better draining.
Now for the stupid question to everyone on this thread. What is tempered glass ? I've heard of it but don't know why or what the difference is.

tempered glass is glass that has been put under tremendous pressure before they finish making it. that way it can handle more weight. the drains arent going to go directly in the center, but closer to the center than to the returns, that way i'm moving water over a greater distance of the tank. i'm also thinking about the pro's and con's of this 'two return pump' idea. i like the idea of having a backup pump running in case one should fail, but i also like the idea of only having one pump to deal with. it seems that having two pumps would make getting the flow rates equal a little difficult. that said, shouldnt the turn over through the sump be something like 5x total volume?

i like that a lot. i have some questionst about it though.
1) what is the red airline for on the first overflow? is that to prime that overflow?
2) i like the idea of the second overflow, but when the first overflow clogs, what gets the siphon started on the second overflow?
3) are none of these overflows connected? there are 3 overflow pipes running to the sump?
4) how far down the coast to coast did you cut the slits?

I ended up modifying the system drawn,Here is a link to the full description of the coast to coast posted.

I forgot the dimensions of my coast to coast but i can measure it if you like.I also didn't cut any slots ,they aren't necessary.
