I have a 5 inch DSB. When i first setup my tank my LFS told me that playsand from home depot would be good, so i got some and the bag said the sand was screen, wash, and silicia free. I also add 2 inches of LS to cover up the tan color of the playsand. The tank has been up for 8 months now and for the last month or so i have been fighting cyano, so i added a sump/fuge and that seem to help with the cyano, but the cyano went from red to a brown slime look (stringy) but i also have some blue/green spots in there. All of the slime/cyano is only on the SB and little spots on the glass of the tank more of just above the SB. Also have some in the fuge but only on the glass. Is this because of the playsand? If so what would be the best way to remove the sand? If i leave the sand in there will i be fighting this forever?
