In the process of building a custom tank and wanted to know everyones opinion on ideal depth for a dsb in a reef tank and in a fuge. Price, space, etc are of no consequence.
thanks,

imo a good 4 inch base in the main is good for holding rocks up and serves a good filtration purpose. in the fuge i think a big fat 6+ inches is good. i think DSB belongs in a sump or fuge. in the main tank sand that deep can look a bit sloppy

Depends on the size of the tank, now if you plan of having a refugium in the future then I'd go with a 2 inch sandbed in the main tank and 4+ in the fuge.

I had a 4in DSB in my 20g (high), it didnt look sloppy at all. I used natures ocean LS. It was white with specks of pink.
I kept it super clean with a tigertail cuke. (who I might add asexually reproduced in my tank!!! and then there were two.)
anyway, this kept my nitrates at 0. never rasied once in the two+ years i had my reef tank.
