Dsb ?

I have a 3-5 inch DSB. All of my LFS(4 in town) told me to get rid of it and make it about 1 inch thick..I guess the reason is because of the black sand! Which i had got a little pocket of it ...removed with turkey baster (no problems with anything). So after i found that pocket of black sand, i removed more sand and found more little black sand pockets, still no problems. So i did some research and this topic is very debatable. I heard if you do not desturb the black sand the it will be ok ....is this true? I also got some olive snails to go in there.
So the question is DSB or Shallow? Does it also help to control your nitrates?

The prob. you are having is that the DSB is not set up right. With the correct macro-life in the substrate the anaerobic water would be in balance with the aerobic and you would have no prob.
“I heard if you do not disturb the black sand the it will be ok” The right thing here is to set the sand bed up so you don’t get the black sand. The sand may be too fine for the depth you want.

I would reduce it to 1-2 inches and see how it goes. The reason the LFS told you to get rid of it and make it about 1 inch thick is sugar-sized sand will stay clean of black sand at one inch. Fine sand 2-3 inches. Play sand I don’t know witch it is. But if you want to be done with it makes it 1 inch and you should be good if you maintain it property.
