Question
I have a 100 gal bowfront that is about 6 months old. I started out with regular sand grade 1 and 2. (approx 100lbs). About 3 months ago I added 40lbs of LS to make the base about 2-2.5 inches. Will the original base become live and how long does the process take. Also, can I add more ls to the top of the base to increase the filtration.

That 100 bow front from Tenecor is a heck of a display. I've looked at it a few times...I'd think it would make a beautiful reef.
In time the sand you used for your base will become live via the LS you added and the life from any LR you may be using. Nothing in this hobby except problems happen quick.
It would be very difficult to say how long the process will take...but it will happen if your water chemistry is in line and the system is stable. It would be easy to add additional sand...but take care to prevent a major sand storm...

I've heard that when adding sand you shouldn't add more than 1/2" at a time. Otherwise you will suffocate the organisms beneth the new sand.
Good luck.
