Dumb Question...What is Halide light VS Actinic?

We were set up (by our LFS) with the Actinic version & the Halide lights were listed as option. Why would a tank need the Halide lights?

Metal Halide lights should be listed as the primary source, with the actinic spectrum as supplemental. Metal Halide is a type of lighting and is the most powerful form of light available to reefers. Actinic lights refer to the spectrum of light usually 420-460 nanometers- the blue wavelength(last to be filtered out by water and therefore penetrates the deepest). You can buy actinic bulbs in either NO, VHO, PC, or T5 forms of fluorescent lighting. Halides are much more important overall.

I have another thread going about our Colt Coral dying...could this be why? All water quality issues are fine...and it just PISSES me off that my LFS (who set up the tank) STILL haven't mentioned anything about the Halide lights...

people are afraid of what they don't know..........maybe it's not his fault. Maybe he needs to be more educated.

Could be....but when the LFS wrote up the quote before we purchased anything, it included the Halide lights as an option for additional cost. I just get the feeling that they were trying to "low ball" the bid...we've had to add a chiller, three jet-head things to move the water better, & a few other issues I forgot already...they didn't address any of those things. So it just makes me suspicious.
And as far as not knowing...I would guess they DO know...they are a HUGE, prestigous fish dealer in our area. I find it hard to believe that they would know about halides well enough...but maybe you're right...

What type of lighting would be the best for a 125 gallon, mostly fish but some inverts like snails, starfish, cleaning shrimp? I wont have any corals but some feather dusters. If I dont have any coral, do I need to use a strong light or to keep the light on 12 hrs at a time? :help: :jumping:
