Dumb question.

Clownfish pair up in the wild. By having two of them (in a mated pair) you will get more natural behavior. They can do fine alone... but who wants to be alone all the time?

So would I have to buy an already mated pair at the LFS or online? Or could I just get any random 2 of the same species?

I'm not sure if u have to buy them all ready paired up but, i know they got to be the same kind of clown fish.

It's best to buy them already paired. The problem is that all clowns start out being male. When they pair up, the larger one becomes female. Whenever you have a pair of clownfish, the larger one will always be the female. Once they become female, they don't go back...
So the risk is that if you buy two random clownfish, you may be buying 2 females and not even know it. If either of them has ever been paired in the past, the larger one would have become the female.

I had my false perc for 2 years and then got the smallest one i could fine and they have been doing great. within 2 weeks they were paired. The female seems much happier now

i bought two small false percs, about an inch long if that, and they paired up almost imeaditly when i put them in the tank. i just made sure one was slightly larger than the other.

I think the only "dumb question" is the one that isn't asked. (Or many that I do ask.) If you can find a source that has a bunch of juvis in the same tank; then they are usually aquacultured and you should get two random fish to become a pair, the smaller the better. As to why; IMO, its simply because they're aren't that many fish you can keep together. The way a pair of clowns react with each other is very unusual in our hobby; and a great visual addition to almost any tank.
