Durso direct to pump?

Ok.. havent seen this done anywhere after hours of searching the magical interweb....

I am getting a Berlin HO skimmer, going to do the kent venturi mod on it, and i am going to run it with a quiet one 3000 (700gph). I wanted to do an overflow so that i can get surface water and i was looking at a hang on design.... Is it worth doing a durso style standpipe in it... ?
I do want it to be silent...
So on to the question. Can i connect the durso directly to the inlet on my pump? Or will this let too much air into the pump causing it to cavitate? Bulkhead on the overflow is like 1.5 inches so i would either mod it to be 3/4 or just do a 1.5 inche standpipe. I only have a 30 gal tank.
Thnaks

Can't you just put the pump in the inside box and not need to do the U tube thing. Durso is to stop the gurgleing sound of the draining to a sump.

The durso will be quieter than most any other type of stand pipe (and you will need "some" type)...
And no, not direct to pump, yes too much air...Need some sort of "sump" or collection chamber to gather the water together and allow bubbles from drain pipe to dissipate before entering pump...
But..Loking over the thread again, sounds like your going to use a hang on skimmer and want to feed it water skimmed off the surface...?? Is that the idea..?
If so where the pump hangs over into the tank place it in an appropriately sized specimen container with enough flow to keep it submerged... then the pump will suck water not air and the surface will drain into the surface skimming chamber...

hmm good idea. I was just thinking i could use an overflow since i can get one from a guy on here for like 20 buck.

Eh fudge it.... i dont have the free time to rig someting up right now..
i have enough surface agitation with my 250 hOT on the end of the tank and wiht the 700 gph running the skimmer ill jut have to set the outputs of the skimmer to move the water around as much as possible
Thanks for the suggestions though.

Can you give me a list of PVC pieces in the last picture of the overflow. This looks like a great idea to cut down on noise. Sorry for the hijacking.
