Durso standpipe question

Hey all,
I have a durso style standpipe in my oceanic overflow. I have read that it is self priming. So to put this in layman's terms, I will not have to take the risk of getting a mouthful of cruddy water to get this thing started?
That would be awesome.

from my experiencing... you just thread the thing in and drill a hole on the cap. the toughest part is actually the hole drilling. not that the drilling itself is hard but drilling a hole of appropriate size is takes some trial and error

snailheave,
I did not read that I had to drill a hole. It came as part of a kit. Do I actually have to drill a hole?

I wonder if Rich is getting paid for these kits? I would think the hole would already be drilled but then maybe not.
As snailheave mentioned, getting the size right is the key. Start small (1/16") and work up from there. You can also tap or glue in a small gate valve...I tried it on my Stockman pipe but it made too much noise.

golfish,
I just got home and will check the standpipe tonight for a hole. I also researched Durso standpipes and, considering the wide usage, Rich Durso should definitely get a patent immediately. If you know him you might want to suggest doing that ASAP. If he has a patent and it is contested it will help that everyone calls it a Durso standpipe but it won't do squat unless he files.

You got a picture? Sounded like you indicated from the post that it came with your Oceanic. If your tank is brand new Oceanic RR come with the drain/standpipes and return kit. AGA don't. I looked at the Oceanic when I was shopping for a new tank just don't remember what the drain/stand pipe looks like. The one sold by AGA as an add-on looks like the durso and has the hole on top and a few on the side and is self priming/starting.

Here is a picture of the AGA megaflow assessory kit standpipe. The arrows point to holes.
