The first pic shows him in his burrow, right in the front of the tank, so he is always visable. He pops out alot to find rubble and shells for his home or just shoots straight up for no reason at all.

In response to your question about qt the jawfish, I think that any fish that relies on the sand to live should not be quarantined. This in itself can stress the fish out to get sick. Most qt do not have sand, live rock etc. Make sure it is eating at the LFS, have them hold it for a few days. Know your store, is it reputable? I would never buy a fish like this say from ***** that has no clue on saltwater fish....knowing I was not going to quarantine.

IMO, always quarantine all incoming fish. The best lfs's in the world have sudden unforeseen outbreaks. Theres nothing wrong with throwing a couple inches of sand in the qt for a fish that needs it. The only problem is when medicating the sand may absorb some meds. Tiny plastic beads can be used instead.

Thats '' not '' what is commonly called a Dusky. Its a Tiger or Bali Jawfish....IMO, looks much nicer than a Dusky.

Ok, thanks for that info. Someone on the boards discribed his dusky as an ugly gray color all over, not just on the head and I was wondering if i actually had a dusky jawfish, now i know what I really have. Thank you!

I still stick to what I said, I do not qt any fish that relies on sand. Know your dealer...don't rely on "it's ok."

i was purchasing a dusky jawfish the other day, when they just got in a shipment of yellow headed ones, so i got one of those instead, but in a week, its dissappeared, isnt that awesome.... yeah, i have a full hood with no holes, so yea, jawfish are awesome, i wish mine still existed

He is probably still in your tank someplace, but maybe not. I had a yellow headed one who did the same thing, they seem to hide more then the duskys or the tiger.

i took apart the entire rock work (i was looking for it + adding new live rock and such) and i couldn't find it. Its only a 29 gallon, so its not like i had that much area to look for it, it built and elaborate system of caves and tunnels though, but he wasnt in them, im probably going to be looking into the dusky ones now though, i enjoy the bottom dwelling fish (i have a watchman goby and scooter dragonet and [for a while] a jawfish, bottom dweeling types of fish are the best.)

I like bottom dwellers also. I have a scooter blenny, mandrin and now my tiger jawfish. In my nano I have a randal goby and pistol shrimp. Good luck with your next jawfish

NyGel, your yellow head jawfish could have hidden pretty deep in one of the rocks. I bought some live rock at a local LFS, watched the guy shake it around pretty good and bagged it up (no water, just damp). We headed home and did some tank maintenance, rearranged for the new rock etc. Took approx. 1 1/2 to 2 hours from the time we bought the rock until we were ready to put it in the tank. I picked up the bag, took out the rock and noticed a slimy little dark thing in the corner of the bag. It was a flametail blenny that had hidden in a hole in the rock. It survived in about a teaspoon of water during all of that time. That was about 6 or 7 months ago and he's alive and doing very well. But he does disappear sometimes for a day or two.
