Duster lost his duster

The past couple of days, I have noticed that my feather duster's duster was getting a little "tattered" looking. When I got home from work today, I see that he has now dropped off his duster. The actual worm is still in the tube...I know because I can see him through a clear section of his tube, and he "jumped" when I touched the tube.
I know it will grow back eventually, but I have three questions...
Does this happen on a regular basis? Kind of a way to replenish an old and tattered duster
Do I need to do anyhing special for the duster while he is regrowing a new duster?
How long does it take for the duster to regrow?
Thanks!

Not sure how regularly it happens, but there have been posts here about that happening. They do grow back.

Is someone picking on the duster?
You will not see it come out for a while, then one it will have new ones just a little smaller then before. I don't remember how long it takes. I had a decorator crab who stole the crowns off 3 dusters and was wearing them on his head. I was so pissed, after I got over being mad at her, it was funny.
You don't have to do anything special for him while he is growing his crown back. Un less someone is picking on him.
Hope it makes you feel a little better.

I remember 3 yrs ago when I first got to know SW. I tore a feather duster apart after its feather crown came off 'cause I thought it was dead. It scared the heck out of me when I touched the worm with some moving legs (didn't know it was a worm 'till I killed it :( )
So I got another one from a LFS, and this one also let go its feather crown after a week in my newly setup tank (didn't know that tank should be cycled at the time) This time I just lelf it in the tank for a few weeks (forgot how many days) then I just happened to see a new crown grew on it but it was smaller the old one. So I think it changes its feather crown when it's adapting to a new environment, just MO

Your loss could be an indicator off a water problem. If it is a water problem and you get it corrected you should see regrowth in a few weeks. Hope this helps.
