Dying Brain Coral?

We are very new to reef tanks. We have a 120g that was previously set up as an aggressive tank with a clown triggerfish, huge lionfish, porcupine puffer, etc. we recently set our tank back up and decided to go reef this time around. We purchased some live rock, coral, and fish from someone getting out of the hobby. Everything is going great. However, the brain coral that came with what we purchased was already in bad shape. It seems to have turned brown and looks like an exoskeleton other than a small dime size portion on top which is still bright and green but I have not seen it extend at all to try to eat. I also have no clue what it is supposed to look like but I'm certain it shouldn't look like this. I have trigger fed it some mysis shrimp and dipped it in reef dip as per suggested by my LFS on Friday. I'm seriously hoping I can bring this guy back to life. All levels are great in our tank and all the other coral and fish are thriving. Lighting is the orbit marine and is on the power grow setting.

Can you list what the levels are? It's very difficult to diagnose without accurate numbers.

Don't give up on it, I've seen them come back even after looking completely dead and thrown in the trash.

How is your lighting (orbit marine - what size?)? How far from the light is the coral? Waterflow? You mentioned it was in decline before you got it so it may be the original equipment isn't sufficient.

They typically feed just after lights out and at early dawn. Try feeding your fish 10 minutes before lights out and then see if that gets it to extend its feeding tentacles.
