Jessica do you have cured LR & LS? If so then the spike may not be so bad. Have some saltwater mixed and ready to do a quick change if the ammonia reaches .50.
The reason that there is such a wide variety of information offered for the salt hobby is that different people have different experiences. There are so many varrying factors in this hobby that lead to different results. For example, some people have CC substrate, others have sand. There are many different kinds of LR, filters, media, water sources, etc. There is also alot of plain outdated information out there (cycling with fish, using UGF's etc.) Different things work for different people. This site offers the experience of MANY different people. You will find what works best for you and your system in time. The important things right now are to take your time and learn as much as you can. There is one thing that most hobbiests everywhere will agree on, Patients!! I hope the clown does alright. If you have any questions or problems that come up please don't hesitate to ask

Highly recommend NOT getting the tang for the 55 especially when your experience is low.

My advice is to stop everything your doing and adding. You really need to let the cycle finish. Now that you have the clown in there just let it go. Since the store won't return it any tank you place it in will then cycle. Your kinda stuck! Do you have any live rock? If not this would have helped the cycle by adding the bacteria your trying to grow. You may thing of getting some. I wouldn't do a water change until the cycle is complete. If you do you risk screwing up the cycle. Also, whenever someone is trying to sell you something take everything they say with a grain of salt. How many times have you bought a car and the salesperson ACTUALLY told you the car was a POS? Just my opinion..GOOD LUCK!!!
And just so you know..we've all been where you are now!!! EVERYONE here has killed a fish by doing something he/she shouldn't have. If ya wanna laugh just look at my first posts! LOL

i have 40lbs of base sand, 15lbs of live sand, 44lbs of base rock and 10lbs of lr, the rock was in boxes dry and you just picked what you want, they at the lfs told me to let it soak in a color till end of cycle but someone on here told me to put it in so i did today. is this ok?

they said at the lfs if i put the br in now it would spike something but they said on here that wasnt so what do you think? i hope not bc i done it already. also i have a couple more questions
1. they said on here i might need another power head on the back at the bottom facing toward the front to go through the water is this true?
2. also yesturday they tested the water and it was amonia 0.25 i tested it today for the first time with a home kit and i think it might be close to 0.50 could it go up this fast ?or am i reading it wrong?

skimmer definately get a coralife super skimmer (css) asap not that you need it right away but why not start with it then you can break it in and tweak it while you cycling i might get conflicting responce to that but so be it, and yes it can go up that fast, do you have saltwater ready for a water change? if not you might want to consider making a batch asap (more asap on this than the 1st asap) keep us informed tobin

Agreed! Right now there is no protein to skim.
Adding the rock is fine. You probably could have just added the rock by itself and the tank would have cycled. Adding fish isn't necessary to cycle. Now, let the cycle run its course. In a few days the Ammonia will begin to come down and the trites will rise. When the trites begin to come down you will get diatom algae (brown stuff) all over your sand and glass. When that happens the cycle should be complete. Do a water change and add a cleanup crew. I wouldn't add any fish for 2 weeks or a month after that. The idea is to stabilize the tank and keep it that way as much as possible. Only add a fish about once every 2 weeks..IF that! On a young system such as yours you have to be kinda careful. It is much easier to crash. After about 6 months it will be much more stable. Mine is about 4 years old and I don't even test for Ammonia, trites and trates because I haven't had them in about 3.5 years. I just test for Alk and Ca (which if the cycle confuses you, dealing with corals will put you in the crazy house...lol).
If you need another PH then might I suggest checking out E online

[hr]
site Bay. There are some GREAT deals on there, far better than LFSs. I would reccomend Maxi Jet. They are generally thought of as a good PH for the money. If you have any specific questions post them here, there are a lot of good people who will be happy to help you. Also, remember there are many different ways to get the job done and everyone does things differently. Also opinions are like ******** everyone has one. Take everything with a grain of salt! Good luck!!!
BTW...Welcome to the addiction!!!

Hows your other Clown doing today? Whats your Ammonia readings? You want to make sure you test everything everyday during a cycle especially since you have the Clown in there.

Probably close. what are your readings?
Once Ammonia and trites reach 0 then your cycle is "over"
