little update...i woke up this morning and some of the polyps on the frags were up...i have rubber banded them as lightly as i could to the rocks but they may have to come off earlier than a week

you did not answer my questions.
rubberbanding can easily cut through the leather , especially really tight ones, so keep an eye out for flesh cutting.

oh sorry....i thought it was understood that it came to me in bad shape....my parameters
SG-1.026
ph 8.0
ammonia-0
nitrate-0
nitrite-0
calcium-500
alk-8.4 dkh
did not test phosphate because i us RO/DI and do not add any additives other than the occasionaly iodine 4 drops/ 100gallons and 20 mls of magnesium both once/week...1/2 cube frozen food thawed in tank water every other day....water change every 2 weeks

check your phosphates. they can accumulate over time regardless of those practices. in fact feeding frozen cube food often increases PO4. do you have a fuge? how old is your tank? how old is the LR? did you buy it new or used ?
FME, leathers are the first corals to succumb to phosphate poisoning. they seem to be very sensitive to it. i lost a yellow fiji leather and a toadstool at about the same time, and everything else was looking good. by the time i got a PO4 test reading of 2.0 other things were starting to not be happy as well, but it did not take much to kill the leathers.

i have another toadstool leather in the tank too and it is perfect...stands straight up and all the polyps are extended....dont have a fuge though...tank is a little over a year old as is the rock....tank was bought new...only other thing that does not open now are the kenya trees..i have a fairly large one and it is closed during the day but opens at night after the lights go off....i will check phosphates when i get home from work

here is a question???? if you put the rubber band to tight and it cuts through the frags will you then have more frags...like since i fragged it and got 4 quarters and the rubber band cuts through the 4 that i have will it grow into 8 frags???

yea you can frag that way, i have done it with leathers before, only problem is sometime they dont stick, you can lose the frags

is it normal for the edges to of the frags to form like a flowy foam or dark brown "skin" that is kind of bubblely like a burn??

I've frag many tood stools before by cutting chunks off the the edges, I've tried the rubberband method but it didnt work for me, it eventually cut into the coral in a matter of a few days, I had 100 percent using superglue GEL, model store or DrsFostersmiths.com I use it for all my frags, LPS SPS leathers, and xenias works too,
Get small tongs and paper dry you piece lightly, and glue the cut end onto a small piece of rock. Hold it there for 45-60 sec, then put the piece in the water. It will cure in the water. not too much glue as it may burn the coral too much and fall off in a few days. use lightly. Then in a few months your frag will over grow the glue area and take hold it self to the rock. I like using Tufa rock because it has more nut and cranny to hold the gel.

i took the rubberbands off this morning cuz it was cutting in to the coral and some of them did not look like they were doing good....the skin looks like it is recessing and there is some dark brown stuff around the edges and was starting to form where the bands were...also the bands smelled AWFUL!!

the bands are sufficating the flesh, shove the peices of coral in the sand if its big or leave it in a corner so you dont loose it, then aim a fair water flow towards them enough to airate but not too hard to blow away, make sure you give it lighting, if you have a small plastic dish fill it 1/3 with sand and place the corals on it, then place the dish where it will get flow and light.
Give it a few day for the coral to recoop, it may take a while for it to close the wounds and start to regenerate, I wouldnt glue at this time, wait till regenerate, and heal, if not the flesh may just continue to melt at glue point because its so weak. healthy toad stool's flesh will be dry and leathery when immediatly out of the water, if its slimy then that part its dying, Finger leather coral is harder to manage becuase that coral is slimmy all the time,

they are in a general low flow area so i just put htem back on the bottom of the tank without the bands so hopefully it will rebound

dont give up hope to quickly, leathers tend to get in a "foul mood" for a good week after they are fragged. the more cutting, the worse they look, for longer.

well the frags didnt make it...i suppose the rubber bands were not the way to go as they all became foul smelling and slimey gross lookin so i will try again with a stubby finger leather that i have

it helps if the leather is healthy to begin with, for sure. the reason behind that one's suffering is still a mystery, right?

yeah...i dont know how healthy it was before i got it either so...i was part of a coral package i bought....i fragged a stubby finger that came with that same pack tonight used super glue this time...cut it in half dried the cut side super glue to the rock and it stuck within seconds of it touching the rock....so lets see how it pics up
