My leathers do it all the time. They're out, they shrivel, they're out. Basically this is a daily thing for them and they reproduce and grow like crazy. IMO they're fine.

Yes it is irritated. I've seen them so irritated that their branches shrink like little nubs. Did you try a small water change?

I have seen mine do this. Sometimes it's a water change that sets them off. Or some times it some other change, like change in water flow. but they will get use to it and come back out.
My clowns host in my colt and at first my colt looked worse and is fine. You will see it from time to time not extend, just you triggered this.. It will be just fine !!!!!!
