That was an interesting article I appreciate the post. It definitely makes you think and I agree I would not want to move a 5' eel either. Though if I did go the tessy route I would move him in a couple of years so I wouldn't imagine he would be that big at that point. So as far as the smaller eels go like the dme or fimby can you keep those together? Could you put a pair in a 150?

I recall Tim(myerst) saying that he housed a Tessy Eel for quite awhile and that it bit him pretty bad. Hes probly your best route for real experience with one.

One more question for informational purposes. I have seen and read about people keeping eels that grow 3-4 feet in a 75 (which I believe is 4 feet long). What is the difference in keeping a 5-6 foot long eel in a 6 ft tank? I am not trying to force an issue or anything I just want to understand what I am missing. Thanks again.

here is a baby in 75 gallon. This is the one I may buy at my local lfs. They want almost $500 though. Which is insane. Does there honestly look like enough room? I just gave the guy crap about the crappy rock work. Over 2 feet not yet 3. Its mouth is huge
Its a baby by Tessy standards.

Hey. Well here is my experience with these guys. They are beautiful, but beauty comes with a price especially as it grows. IMO they should only be kept by P. aquariums or by true aquarists. I had one years ago that was in the 4'+ range and was kept in something like 200 or so. We had to keep cinder blocks on top of the tank to atleast try and keep him in. Doing tank maitence, i.e algae scrubbing, was next to impossible. Tankmates, except for some damsels was not going to happen. One of the most aggressive and realistically dangerous fish I have ever dealt with. Getting bit will most likely cause a ton of stiches, worse the infection that most likely follow from the bacteria in their mouth can cause severe long term pain. I would go a different route. Most people think I am crazy, but if the Tessy does well and grows well, which they can grow at an alarming rate, it is similar to keeping a 6' saltwater croc. I am not kidding. T

Oh by the way. 500.00 is absolutely ridiculous to pay for that eel. Most places are trying to give a Tessy of that size or bigger away for free. You can get a Hawaiian Dragon for that price if you know where to look. If you want a 500.00 eel that is a complete showstopper and can be manageble kept with other fish than get a Dragon or many other eels. T

So this question has had me thinking since it was asked. One day....one day, I may want a tessy / Damsel tank.
What would be a proper home for a Tessy and could two be kept together?
240sq (48x48x25)?
240g (96x2x24)?
375g (96x36x25)?
500g (96x48x25)?
Bigger????
I might just do this one day.

You tell me you would stick this in a measly 6 foot tank and think its good for it. Look at the size of some of those fish. Those are huge triggers and angels its swimming past and those fish would be cramped up in a 150.
