eel in open tank?

my lfs has a darling little snowflake eel I'd like for my reef, but I read that eels in general like to leave the tank. I have an open-top tank and it would be nearly impossible to eel-proof it. Should I give up the dream?

I have had snake nosed spotted that died of old age and currently have snowflake. If fed well they don't wander very much, but if you do have problems, fiberglass screen wire works great to cover holes. Caution if you have losbster's snowflakes will snack on them hard. However they will allow cleaners to wlak on them...
