Eel Question

I was getting a 12 gallon reef for my birthday and was wondering if there is good species of eel that doesn't attack inverts or small fish (like a half inch clown goby) and is good for beginners.I also have a 3 nch sand bed. I will be upgrading next year to a 50 gallon aquarium. All questions appreciated

hey...most eels belong in aggressive tanks...buuuttt...you might be able to get a small snowflake eel...he might pick on ur goby but if they dont have any of the same habits...maybe youll be fine. I know the the snowflake eel doesnt pick on coral or invertabrates; but like i said before...he might pick on your goby.
if you keep a good eye on him and they get along fine than leave him..but if their are any signs of being aggressive to the goby you must take the eel back to the LFS (live fish store) because the goby will most likely end up in its stomach....have a nice day

I also heard that blue ribbon eels are very pasive and was wondering if a small one would be okay in my 12 gallon until Christmass or March when I would be upgrading to 50 gallon. Thanks

i havent heard about that kind of eel... but all eels are kind of aggressive so just make sure you watch him with your goby.

Any eel will eat a .5 in. goby but the smallest eel is the dwarf yellow moray. One would probably be fine with inverts.

Eels are predators, they are going to eat whatever will fit into their mouths when hungry. A snowflake eel isn't a good idea in a 12 gallon tank, as they can get rather large. Mine started out about 6-8" long and about as big around as a pencil. It died recently when it decided to go "floor surfing", at the time of it's death it was 2 years old and about 18" long and about as big around as a half dollar.

Ribbon eels are not a hardy species. I would wait for a snowflake until your 50g and do a fowlr in the 50g. Eels will eat anything that can fit in their mouth. Good luck with your reef!

If your upgrading to a 50 then maybe get a small snowflake, research before buying one to see how fast they grow because I wouldn't keep an eel in there that reaches 10 inches by the time you move it, I may be wrong, I have no expierence with eels so I may not even have the right info. Hopefully people who have had expierence with eels will help you out.

Also in my opion I would stick with the 12g being a reef and wait for the 50g before any eel. Just a thought.
