eggcrate on bottom of tank

Someone recommended putting eggcrate on the bottom of a tank to spread out the stress of the rock and make it more stable. I worry that this will make it harder for critters that sift sand. Is this a legitimate worry? Have you put anything besides sand and rock in the bottom of your tank?

I have not done this. The only time I would consider using it personally is if I were going to set up a plenum. Other, IMHO, it is not necessary and may, as you suggested, hinder sand sifting creatures. If you are going to keep sand sifting/burrowing fish I would just put your rock in first, then the sand. That way the rock won't cave in on a burrowing critter.
