Not to steal your thread but since we are on the topic what are you guys thoughts on egg crate cutting down on the amount of light reaching the tank. After all it is in actuality light diffuser for fluorescent lights.
My lights are on the coralife legs about three inches from water. With egg crate then in between doesn't that cut down on the light reaching the tank? My tank is completely open right now which of course makes me stand offish on purchasing any fish with a jumping reputation.

You did not specify the wattage. plus 80 watts, with a heater, can still equal a 3 to 4 degree temp shift between day and night, depending on what your are doing in the tank, that could be a problem, I am just speaking from a expeirence. I have a 96 watt 20" coralife fixture on a 29gal tank with a 10gal sump and that was exactly what happened to my water temp. By the way that 20" fixture rocks!

A tin snip is like a pair of shears, except with big fat cutting arms and a heavyduty handle. They can cut real tough stuff like tin, metal wire, 4< gauage wire, etc... Any lowes or home depot should have them

There is black egg crate out there, but it is not sold at hardware stores, honestly I don't know where it is sold, but I have seen black egg crate, I suppose technically it would not reflect as much light into the tank as white, but I doubt it would be enough of an issue to matter.

The one in the picture is actually chrome. I bought a 2x4 piece of it from Lowes. Can't remember how much it cost. It was a little hard fitting it on the bowfront tank because of all the cutting involved to fit the arch, but other than that, no big deal. I also cut mine straight across in one spot so that I can take just the front off to hand-feed my puffer.
