Electric Bill POLL:

I know this will be a generalization....but here goes. How much lower do you think your electric bill would be if you didnt have your tank. Please state size, lighting, hrs per day lights are on. I have a 15000 gallon pool and 500 gallon hot tub and I bet it costs me 2-3 dollars a day just to run that. Right now I have a 130 reef,320vho,250mh,10hrs a day. Have not had it long enough to get 1st electric bill. Of course like every other hobby, dont show the wife the true costs!

hey buddy we'll find out the true cost at some point, then you'll be in trouble
My electric bill went up by about $100 a month when we put the 150g tank in place. It has 3-250watt MH - approx 10 hours a day, 2-96watt PCs approximately 11 hours a day, plus a reef dart pump for a CL, The pump for a Euroreef skimmer, the return pump, 2 heaters, a chiller, plus various other equipment.

100$ a month :scared: I guess the wife will have to work a little more OT
I suppose I could look at everything I have plugged in and get the watts, voltage and amps and figure it out but why bother,I gotta have it. I live in south Florida so I am prepared with a back up generator for next hurricane season.
Hope I dont need to use it though.

That's why I don't use MH's, I use T5's and my bill is not much more, maybe $20 at the most. I also have a pool and a spa and the cost is neglibgible in the winter since I can heat it but I don't.

Mine went up $80.00 when I turned on the 3 175 MH's and the 2 55w pc's. I also added a mag 9.5 return pump. Wife wasn't happy, but I didn't complain (much) when she wanted the hot tub. It's 0 degrees here in Michigan so I'm really paying for the hot tub.

I’m not sure I want to know how much my hobbies are costing me, but if needed take the watts used per unit i.e. pump, lighting and the time that each unit is operating in hours.
Once you have a total for the watt consumption for a 24-hour period it will not take long to calculate that against your local kw cost for a monthly cost.

I guess this is one area that I just don't want to even think about.
When the DW tells me we don't have enough money to pay the electric bill I'll deal with it then.
Very similar to pulling into the gas station with my RV. Very rare that somebody doesn't come up to me while filling and ask what mileage I get. It is a constant temptation to tell them that I don't know and don't want to!

Mine went up around $30 a month.
65 gal. with 2x150w MH plus all the pumps, skimmer, etc.
But I also had to run my A/C during the day some to deal with heat issues.

the 100 bucks a month seems a little hi, but hey anything is possible!
My halides 3 x 250w / t5's 8 x 39w factor out to ~30 a month
t5's @ 10 hrs/day - ~10 bucks a month
halides @ 8 hrs/day - ~20 bucks
moonlights are pennies and wont even consider them
9.4 amps total
I could see ~100 bucks a month for everything, i thinging thats what they meant!

edit: forgot to mention...wanna know expensive? Try heating the pool end of september! :scared:

My tanks probably cost me about 60-80/mo, but I have three of them at the house. I have a huge system in my office at work though that probably costs my company $100+ per month alone to run. I like my company.

Monopoly - would be the single word I would use...
defined as a persistent market situation where there is only one provider of a product or service. Monopolies are characterized by a lack of economic competition for the good or service that they provide and a lack of viable substitute goods.

Some areas are supplied with power from expensive coal burning etc type plants. Middle of Texas for instance i hear (form relatives there) is insane for electricity....

In a small town that for "convenience" resells us the utilities all combined on one bill. Supposedly the electric is sold to us at their purchase price but I'm not buying that story. Unfortunately we have no choice in providers
