Hey guys need some help. I've had an elegant coral for about 7 days. Day 1 and 2 did great beautifull coral. Day 2 did a little research and moved it from my rock work in to my sand bed. Day 3 still looking great. Day 4 only opened half way (one side)
. Day 5 and 6 doing about the same only instead of one side open both sides are just bearly open ..
.. I'm a little lost is this normal ?? I understand probably not the best coral for a newbie but thought I would give it a shot ...

unfortunately this is a coral that should be left in the ocean it has a horrible survival rate in our home tanks. I am sorry to say that its probably about typical and is a sign of the ill fate that is going to happen with this coral.
Sorry

yeah even if it does not survive and this is its last few days dont throw it out you can always use it as a coral plug for other corals to attach to the skeleton. its a sad thing for these beutiful corals though I wish they had a better survival rate and it would be even better.

I never throw out any skeletons and always reuse them for frags or mountings. since they are calcium and what our rock is made out of anyway it will help the tank in the long run.

There is an Elegance Coral specific forum on www.****.com that recently started. Member 'Elegance Coral' is very knowledgable on these corals and may be able to help.

I bought one for $30.00 that was not doing too well in the LFS and I figured I give it a better chance. I put in in the bottom of my 75 gallon with 4X110 VHO's and it is in the sand directly where my return pump is hitting the glass and reflecting to give the coral it's flow. Also a Hydror Korallin is giving it a little side flow. I have had it for a few weeks and the LFS had it for you 5 weeks. It never fully opened in the LFS and after 1 hour in my tank it opened fully and has been ever since. I read an article where it says these are being collected from deeper down and have thinner skin so they require less light or they can be damaged. So if you have MH try giving it a little bit of shade and try giving it good moderate flow directed off the glass. Thats just what worked for me might be a fluke, but I figured I'd share it. Good luck.

If you need to cut down on the light, get some screen, such as the stuff in a screen door, and place it in layers over the top of the tank to filter the light. I hope the best for ya!

Did the same as mscarpena. Put mine at the bottom halfway under a ledge. Gives it a little light and flow. What are you feeding it?
If you have any silversides mash one up into a paste and spot feed it. Do it after everything else is fed so the hermits and shrimp don't steal the goodies.
Hope this helps. Test your water and make sure nothing is outta wack.

Brine will not have enough nutritional value.
Try the silverside mash or some meatier foods and definitely the lighting placement. Mine stays happy even when my clown decided to host it.
And kudos on the wife diggin the hobby!

I hope it survives... He opens up a little better at night not all the way like in the photo but its some comfort. I fed it some shrimp tonight the kind that comes frozen. I mashed it to small pieces and spot fed it. will see how it lookes in the morning I'll try and take some pic's ....

Definetly feed it. Brine has little nutritional value. Cut up a silverside into small 1/4"x1/4" pieces and feed each mouth.
