Glad you're not giving up on it!
The things I get from the stores that aren't doing well turn out to be my favorites. Guess it's the nursing them back thing. Good luck with it. Being a carnivore it will enjoy the meaty stuff.

you have the sort tentical elegance (i had the same one) I had mine for about a month and it slowly started to die. Just like what you said. Half of it opened one day then it just got worse from there.. and it took about a week and a half to completely dissolve to its skeleton ;[ sad, but im not alone either! the longer tentical one as someone posted a pic of on this post I hear are from Australia and have a much higher % survival rate.

Pull it out of the sand bed a little bit. I have seen them go downhill from jawfish stirring up sand on them. Just a little higher to keep any from getting in him.

You can try krill.
Also, if you have some, soak the food in Selcon.
What type of light was it under @ the LFS?

I'm sorry I ment krill .. Selcon??? not sure what that is but I'll try anything.
The LFS had it in a, what I belive to be 225gl maybe bigger tank 6'ft orbit
strip of T5s not sure on the watts or K's ?? I know this doesn't help much but
when I bought it the Orbit lights where not working and it was just under some actinic lighting.

Selcon is a nutritional liquid with tons of good stuff for fish/corals. You should be able to buy it at most LFS. It is fairly expensive though, $20 for 1-2oz. It comes in a smaller bottle with a dropper lid. Or there is the larger bottle for around $100.
You could try reducing the amount of light it's getting with window screen, but I really don't think thats the issue.

I think the pressures of collecting have something to do with it. Many of the one's today appear to be from deeper waters. They is some discussion that with the skimmers etc. our tanks are too clean to support them??? Who knows for sure?? My tank is VERY filtered with moderate flow with lots of LR and Medium light levels. It is a sand bed creature that need to be by its self to prevent abrasion to its tentacles against the LR etc. I feed mine (that MONSTER) twice a week with all kings of foods. Also the tank gets a big daily dose of DT's in the tank once a day.(not that he eats it)
He will sometimes retract more after a good feeding and become darker in color for a day or two at times. I think that is normal.
All the good old reference materials point to this coral being very hardy years ago.
The examples and the way they are kept at the LFS's have a bearing too. Most I have seem in LFS"s are already half dead!!!!!
This is a paste from a post I did last year. I lost mine afer about 8 or 9 months when moving to a new home
Here are a couple old shots of him/ Good Luck..........

Try shading it to give it less light. I think too much light is your problem. I have mine on the bottom of an 18" tank in the sand with 4X110 VHO. There is a hammer coral and a gorgonia blocking the light. Alos the lights are not directly above the coral they are off set about 2" from where the coral is. Try shading it and it will take some time to recover if it does.

My food was mixed fresh ground scallop, clam shrimp and krill in a clam juice base. Leave it lumpy enough to be chunks for him to eat. But I think the Elegance's favorite food seem to be small krill. Seemed to respond best to it.
