He probably got in a fight, hermits can be pretty aggressive, sepecially if you dont feed them...
So can sally lightfoots,
Im not sure if they grow back on the emeralds..
I had a fiddler crab (real cute) in with my 2 emerals, and they terrorized the pour thing, I went to find him to take him out, and they had eaten him, one was munching on him behind a big rock..
So they do fight with each other at times,,,
