Do you have a picture of this? Are you sure it is fin rot? What fish do you have, which one is infected, what do you feed them, and what are your exact water readings?

first, i might be wrong (it wouldn't be the first time) but i thought one diamond per tank, unless it was a really large tank, and second, i thought sw fish could get tail and fin rot. let me google.

here's a couple of sites to look at. i hope they don't get me in trouble
but i know marcyn and marcyn two or plus is pretty easy to use and works well. it causes a lot of bubbles. make sure that its just not that the more aggressive goby is picking at the others tail. hope this helps out.

i don't know, looking at the pic, it looks like that they kinda get along. but looks can be deceiving, atleast that's what mama always told me. about the tail, i see where, but i really cant tell that either. i'm worthless, i'll go jump off the cliff now.

so leave it alone or medicate? The poor fish is stressed for sure - breathing is more rapid than the other one is and sorta hopping along lopsided (I suppose because it's unbalanced with the tail being the way it is). however it is still eating, and as I said, the other one is not harrassing it anymore, really is being friendly now I've watched them for over an hour. So only one per tank for sure? 80 gal bow front -

They can be together in an 80, but an hour of no biting is no guarantee. If you are going to keep them as a pair then keep them as a pair in qt as well. Watch them closely though. Don't medicate, provide a stess free environment. What are you feeding them?

Aw, they can eat better than that. Bump them up to frozen formula foods that aren't gel based. Buy the kind in the flat package and buy some selcon and zoe to add along with the garlic. It will boost their immune system.

Name some frozen formula foods please?

update: I got some erythrimcin to try an help the fish with any infection it got whether from fin rot or from tail biting. Seems after 2 doses there'd be SOME change but, no change in his breathing or color (this fish has been pale and breathing fast). The sick/stressed tailless fish is not eating very well - goes toward the food, but.....doesnt eat it. Sorta like he smells it and wants it, but cant see it to eat it and scoots on by. The other fish is doing fine - good color, eating well etc. Should I go on and put the fish that's ok in my DT? It hasnt had near enough time in the QT but Im thinking if it's agression from him if he was out of the QT not bothering the other guy, maybe the other guy would calm down???? I need some really sound advise here. I got them both on Wednesday this week.

Likely harassment is continuing with this fish. I'd suggest getting a divider for you QT and separate them. Proceed with treatment with Maracyn2, if your QT is well cycled. Be sure to do a small water change just prior to each re-dose. Maximize water circulation, and remove any carbon.

Thank you alot Beth! I'll try that route
I never put the carbon filter in so we're good there.

What size is the display? If they are still fighting in the qt then they will fight in the display as well. If the fins are getting more nipped then they are still fighting whether you witness it or not. The one that has been nipped is breathing heavily now? I don't think that you should keep the two of them together much longer. Someone is going to have to be returned.

We bought a divider and seperated them, but there seemed to not have anymore nipping or anything just prior to that - at least no more from the tail was gone, so I dont know. The fish was pale and labored with breathing. We did a water change and dosed again, but within an hour he passed away. I feel so bad watching him suffer and I feel I did everything I could.

You can use MELAFIX in your qt for fin rot or fin repair. Being that it is all natural and not harmful. I have used it for years when fish show signs of fin damage and you usually see a significant response to the med within 7 days. Of course, that also means that if the fins are getting bit off, you have to remove them from that invornment in order for it to even matter.
