Make it a low pH, planted freshwater tank with a couple show angels, some tetras, german blue rams, kribensis, clown loaches, cory cats, etc. That would look very nice. You could set-up a 265 watt power compact strip light ($90), and have a beautiful natural planted tank.

I say you should still try for saltwater.
Do like most of us do and buy everything piece by piece. It took me about a month just to get two powerheads and salt. It's more rewarding when you pass up food to slave on your tank... or at least it is for me.

well im 17 and self funded, my paents dont help with it directly, but how i get my money is doing the odd jobs around the house, i dont have a job and next week i start college and i have a 125 and a 30 set up and they drain all my money, how hard would it be tp set it up a a sump or fuge ive never looked into one and i thing maybe it could be that but i have NO idea what to do with it or how to do it

Fuges are simple to set-up. You could easily set that 55 up to be a fuge for your 125. Having a fuge on your 125 would greatly help you maintain the 125 while you are away at college. The refuge will help get rid of a lot of unwanted waste build-up and produce a ton of extra oxygen for your tank. Plus, then, it almost like you have another fish tank attached to your 125. You could run a 265 watt power compact on the 55, and then on top of doing caulerpa, chaeto, etc., you could also do corals and coral frags in the 55 as well. The only expenses in setting it up as a fuge would be getting live rock for the tank, macroalgae, drilling it, and getting a powerhead or pump to feed it water.

im leaning toward the fw, i have a 3 year old cousin that is inlove with fish and wants every saltwater fish there is but its really easy to convince him that freshwater is saltwater, i set him a 1 gallon tank that has " baby nemos" and it is so cute, i made a bench for my tank and his and he will sit there as long as i do watching his nemos

Lions got a point on the FW planted tank. Though at times (from personal experience) they can be very very fustrating. Algae blooms & snails the biggest problems. Honestly if you couldn't do SW, I would say FW. I would say do some American cichlids. My favorite tank I'e ever had in my 12+ years of experience was my 75g tank with an Albino tiger oscar & a jack dempsey & 2 large plecos. You could do a colony of convicts. They breed easy & are cool. Rams & kribs are American cichlids also. Well actually some kribs come from Africa, but they need water like the American ones. Since they come from the Congo basin, not Tanganyika, Malwai, or Victoria lakes like most African cichlids who need a water closer to a type like SW fish minus the salt!
I'll tell you EXACTLY what I would do if I had a 55g & was turning it into a FW tank. I would get 2 electric blue jack dempseys, 1 green severum, & 1 rarer type of pleco. Like the mango plescostumas. No live plants just a few plastic ones, but expoxy them down since cichlids love to dig & vandalize tanks.

If money is tight, I would sell it and concentrate on what you already have. You are starting college and will busy enough with that. Setting up a new tank will only drain you of more money that you already don't have.
