yea, it is sorta odd--not needing proper english and such in an english class. i had a teacher that made us actually write in a journal book (remember when you actually had to know how to write, not type?) whatever we wanted as long as it was once a day. I personally think that even though you're not required, you should at least get in the habit of trying to write correctly.
(that being said, i agree with agent-x, i'm not doing what i'm preaching because i'm not trying to pass a class :)

Free writing is not for fun, nor so the teacher could "get to know you", it's so they know what they are dealing with. Your right, freewriting is whatever comes to mind, but your mind needs o be a little more focused. A little more involved in one single thing than touching upon everything.
Your teacher learns a lot about what you don't know but giving a freewriting assignement.
