enough filtration?

i just got my new 75 gal on friday. i was wondering if a berlin turbo skimmer and a wet dry filter rated for 65 gallons would be enough filtration for a small banded catshark. im not planing on keeping him for more than 6 months. my lfs said ounce he out grows my tank they will traid me for a smaller one more fit for my tank. also do skimmers not the hang on models but the knd that would be set up under my tank need a overflow box. any info on a skimmer set up would be helpful also. <img src="graemlins//confused.gif" border="0" alt="[confused]" />

i just got off the telaphone with my local fish store. the wet dry he carries is of ecosystem brand. i asked him about skimmers as far as sharks go. he said ther to $$ and they dont work very well? the other wet dry he has is rated for up to 125 gallons. he said if i decided to go with the larger wet dry i wouldnt need skimmer. i am UNFAMILIAR with sharks but i have had 3 tanks, 45, 55, and my current 75 all of which exept the 75 where not fitted whith eather a wet dry or a skimmer. thats why i sound alittle unfamiliar about this. any info would be very helpful.

also if i did go with the big ecosystem wet dry (rated for 125)and later i decided to put a protein skimmer into it could both of them work off one overflow box. where exactly would the prtein skimmer go in the ecosytem wet dry? im refering to the berlin turbo skimmer.

its very simple queation do i need AN OVER FLOW BOX FOR THE SKIMMER AND THE WET DRY. yes i know i need a over flow box for the wet dry but do i also need an overflow box for the skimmer. it seems every time i ask a logical question you turn it around and make me look like a dumb **** .

thank you, i didnt mean to be ******* , but you just made me feel kinda stupid. so whatyour saying is the skimmer does not need a overflow box it works off of the wet dry. if you could just explain in a little more detial it would be very helpful.

yo only need one overfow, the skimmer should go into your sump or wet dry, or be plumbed from it, but, yes one is all that is needed
i too would forget the ecosystem adn get either lr and sump or a wet dry(my pref is in the lr and sump, but in a fish only and haveing sharks, i would definitely consider the wet dry)
either way yo go, you really need a GOOD AND ADEQUATE skimmer, no 2 ways around that one, the lfs is not doing you a favor by saying they are too much money and you may not want or need one, they are steering you towards anohter product, maybe one they make more money on or can't get rid of or somethign

Village....Don't worry about it. Anthem has made me feel the same way before also. Nothing against Anthem, but somepeople come across in a way that irritates, yet don't mean to. Anthem has alot of knowledge, you just have to keep him from getting under your skin!

Relax Village...You did a good job of getting your point across..until the last one. This is a great message board for learning and can be really helpful to everyone. There alot of very knowledgeable people out there. Keep asking questions and learning. Because every question that your gutsy enough to ask, there are probably a dozen or more with the same question who are scared of looking silly.
Anthem..One of the problems with going through the archives is that information, even within the last year has changed. I did some research on puffers and they went from one extreme to another. And then when someone new does find something in the archive that they want to question, they are chastised for bringing up an old post.
This a great hobby and I'm glad I found it. I just hope that the veterans will continue to answer our newbie questions without taking on an attitude about it. We all started someplace and are given tons of bad information for various sources....Remember your beginnings and then have patience to answer silly questions. If the questions frustrate you, then simply don't answer. An unanswered question probably won't turn a newbie away, while an answer making someone feel stupid probably will!

Village...Back to your original question.
I have been doing some research into the sump thing. I agree with Fshhub on the live rock in a sump. Since you will want the maximum amount of free swimming space in the tank, the live rock in the sump will help alot with the biological filtration. Wet/Dry's are good, but you can have a problem with high nitrates. The live rock can help reduce the level of nitrates once it is firmly seeded. I'd get as big of a tank/container as you can fit in your aquarium stand since the added sump volume will add to the biological capacity of the above tank. Do more research into the flow of the water. I'm a little nervous about having the water over flow either the tank or the sump and causing a big mess. There are several ways to prevent this with various values, etc.
Your protein skimmer will be down in the sump area with the return pump. You do have a choice of putting the skimmer in or out of the sump. To reduce the chances of leakage, I'd chose putting it in the sump if you have enough room. You can also add a UV Sterilizer in the sump area and put your themometers in there too. That will really clean up you tank's look.

Anthem, Anthem, Anthem. Not probing, only stating my opinion. If you think the shoe fits, then that is your choice to wear it. But your not the only one who has been critical when a newbie askes a simple question...and the last paragraph was addressed to everyone in general, not you specifically.
Now if you think that simply taking the time to explain ones point of view is being uptight, your allowed your opinion. But I figured it is better to fully explain than to allow others to twist ones words.
I'm glad that you don't take these things personally....That is the way it should be. Say what is on your mind and respect others for doing the same.

Village...No, I really haven't. I recently looked at their website also and it looks like a pretty nice system. I think Anthem told me awhile back that they are pretty good, but there is a pretty long lead time on fabrication...pretty much made to order.
I would recommend going into the Equipment section of this board and posting a question with Sealife in the title...I'd sure like to see if anyone else has tried this product and is what their results were.
