I change 10% of my water on my 55g ea week I see my nitrates are 20 2 days after the last change. Should I do a 20% every other week and a 10% the other week, or 20% 2 times a month.

the filtrers were new on 9-1-06 i swished them around when i changed water a while back. Do I really need it? I did take out the bio wheels when installed.

IMO...Hard to answer if you really need it without knowing more about your tank, Looks like you have ~200lbs of rock in the tank, has the base rock turned into LR yet?
What model HOB do you have? If you removed the bio-wheel i am not sure it is giving you anything, unless you have filter pads in it to polish the water then you might want to keep it?
I would beef-up the clean up crew a bit.
When my trates hit over 10 or it goes 1 month, thats when i do a water change on my 210.

i agree it's hard to tell without a detailed description of the tank and all the water parameters. how often do you feed (overfeed), and how is the skimmer working...
maybe run the skimmer a little wetter to remove more skimmate, try a 20 % w/c weekly until the trates are under 10.
by the way is it fowlr or a reef set up.
i'm under the impression that 0 is best but trates below 20 are ok.

i have a total of 110# of rock 50 of was 100% cured when i put it in. I feed 2 times a day(small amounts) itsa FOWLR tank the HOB Is bio wheel 350 w/o the bio wheels the ammonia was 0 nitrites 0 nitrates 20 ph 8.2 temp was 79.9 and salt was 1.021. I do have more hermit crabs and some snails coming tomorrow I hope. I do get foam in the skimmer do I raise or lower the o-ring of the skimmer to get it wetter (aqua c). I am mixing up a new batch of water so I change it tomorrow or friday

For filtration purposes, all of your rock can be considered "live". (it doesn't take that long for the bacteria to spread...)
I'm confused about your substrate. You say 'sand and aragonite". That doesn't make sense. Aragonite is the mineral that aquarium sand should be composed of.

If you have mixed substrates this could be an issue. Tell us more.

i used aragonite sand with live sand on top of it. I was going to use play sand but was told this was better
