Hello, I am in the process of setting up a 75 gal. FOWLR tank. Actually it will be a predator tank with a blueline trigger and a panther grouper for starters. My lfs said all I need for filtration is a canister filter (h.o.t. magnum) and a good skimmer, he recommended a Urchin skimmer. Anyone heard of this skimmer? I told him I wanted the best water quality and the least maintenance,if thats possible.I dont think that will be enough biological filtration. Any and all suggestions are welcome. :notsure:

FOWLR = Fish Only With Live Rock. This is your filtration- as long as you have enough rock, which is a little over 75lbs for a 75 gallon [minimum].
Can't say about the urchin but careful with the lfs, most are great and very helpful
but they are still in business to make cash so their opinions can be biased.
I told him I wanted the best water quality and the least maintenance,if thats possible.
Best water quality = get an RO (reverse osmosis) unit with DI.
Least maintenance = gold fish bowl; saltwater tanks are very high maintenance

Urchins are good skimmers, but you need a sump to use one. If you dont have a sump, look at the Remora from AquaC. Its the same manufacturer as the Urchin, but it is the hang on tank version. I've got a Remora on my 75 aggressive and it works great!

Predator tank, you can't have all the LR you need to filter everything, especially with the size of the monsters your going to put in there. Anyways, keep the LR at around 30-40lbs, this will give the beasties room for swimming. ASMG3, or CoraLife Super Skimmer 220, for your skimming needs. And for a filter to catch the uneatin, I would recommend a Ocean Clear Canister with Micron Filter, this can filter up to 1600gph with the right pump, and I would recommend the highest you can get, as this will really help out on the crap these babies will kick up. And the Ocean Clear is capable of holding carbon, for the occasional water clarity.

I'm running an AquaClear 110 for mechanical filtration and an Eheim 2215 canister for biogical, as well as the Remora skimmer.

id use a fluval 404 and a amiracle mini quad skimmer (rated for 100 gallong, no messing around with the skimmer, just plug it in, HOB) also you know the gouper will outgrow your tank VERY fast right?

I have fluvals and they are great filters. There's only one thing about them, you have to make sure you clean them every month. The Coralife Super Skimmer is one of the best skimmers on the market. I've had two ss and would highly recommend one. JMO
