is it the sort of filter you'd put on a freshwater tank?

Penguin is a hang on back type. Hagen HOB's work well too because they use block shaped filter media. You can put some biological filter media from the DT' filtration in it when you need it. My favorite piece of equipment for a qt, although expensive, is a uv sterilizer. A diatom filter is cheaper but really messy to deal with.
I also keep pieces of pvc pipe in the qt for fish to hide in.

penguin filter is a combo filter. it has a filter media bag with activated carbon in it, plus a bio wheel, which is supposed to act as a bio filter.

I was thinking of getting a 3 or 5 gal. tank as a QT. I'd leave it set up Full time for a while at least. I'd like to get rolling on this so it can Cycle with my new main tank. Is 3 or 5 gallon too small for a QT?

I would go with atleast a 10 a 20 would be better. if you get a fish that has any size to it then it will be cramped in the little tiny 3-5 gallon tank for several weeks and could cause more problems.

I have 12g QT and i have fluval 104 canister on it. I only kept sponge in canister. It seems everything good. You would be fine with canister.
