i usally have to top off 5gal-10gal every 2 weeks on a55gal do i still need to do reg. water changes being the evap is so great?

yes as your waste doesn't evaporate. your evaporation is essentially DO water and not taking anything with it. water changes keep everything else in check a lot more.

yuppers! ya gotta do water changes to replace nutrients that are used by the tank, and you probably want to get rid of any detritus that collects too.

hey got more questions,my brother is just startin his 55gal,he is working with a limited funds so i gave him a protien skimmer,2 hob filters,1 100gph powerhead.we are know in the process of filling the tank with ro water.would 1 large piece of live rock and a piece of frozen silverside be enough to get the cycle going?

ok cool,what about his filter setup,i'm a little worried because they are not the bio-wheel type,should i be?
