My LFS has one right now, it's the weirdest looking thing... big, about 8"... sits on the bottom like a hawkfish... bright red/orange colored... and these crazy-looking SILVER eyes... the eyes are flat and look like little mirrors. I have never seen anything like it before?!

I believe that is a rabbitfish. Just an FYI, the large eyes are an indication that this fish is typically found in deeper waters where light is a little more scarce. Hence the large eyes to increase the amount of viable photoreceptors.

It's actually called a Squirrelfish.
The particular type of Squirrelfish that you are talking about is a Big Eye Soldierfish. They are pretty tough to keep and they get up to a little over a foot in length. :)

You know why their eyes are so big don't you? They are usually found in Richard Gere where the light is very limited:eek:

Thanks for the replies... so I wonder is the fish miserable in a tank with light? Does he need to live in dark conditions to be happy?
It doesn't actually look like any of the squirrel fish I've ever seen in person or online. I wonder if they misidentified him...
I'm not thinking of buying the thing, I've just never seen anything like it... the eyes are totally freaky!!

We had one of those little guys in my marine biology classroom last year. He was in a lighted aquarium by himself and he seemed to be doin just fine. Had a lot of personality too. Have fun trying to catch them though, they're fast little boogers
