When you do buy your lighting DO NOT BUYit from Jeffs Exotics Fish. I tryed to buy a light from an ad he was and still is running today in a magazine. And was told it was a misprint.The ad has been running for six months . Same ad same price. The light is a 4-bulbs 96W PC a nice light. But when call to buy the light I was told I could buy the light at that price with out the bulbs. But ad shows the the light with bulbs a fan and more. He told the same story to three of my frineds. This was be for the holiday. He now says the light out stock according BBB. He has had time change the ad. I know some will he a nice guy but. A RIPOFF IS A RIPOFF . Buyer beware.

Lighting depends on what you want to keep and your tank size. Not all need mass light but most like a good amount.(sps) But in my 48"x24"x24" 120g I have 2_250w Iwaski 6.5k. ive tried 10k but like 6.5 better for my sps. I run 4 actinic 110 vho also. I would have ran 400w but heat was an issue. I plan on a 5' long 28" tall and 32 wide in the future. I will run the current lighting but add a 400whqi 20k in the middle.

I've got you all beat.
200gallon reef:
3x 400 watt Iwasaki MH = 1200 watts
8x 110 watt VHO's = 880 watts
Total = 2080 watts
I don't run the MH for that long right now. I have them 10" off the water and they look great along with the vho's.
I'm hitting 10 watts per gallon.
This is turning into an acropora tank although I have a torch, frogspawn, galaxea etc.
You don't even want to see my electric bill.

90 gallon All glass pre-drilled with factory overflow.
4X110watt VHO, 1 superacitinic, 2 50/50, and one aquasun bulbs. From hellolights.com $250.00 delivered
2X250watt MH Iwasaki 65k bulbs, PFO dual ballast $200 bought on line from a fellow reefer. Custom built hood by me! $140.00 which includes the compound miter saw I bought to help build the perfect hood.
So total minus the saw is about $300.00

I'm in the process of starting my own reef tank. I decided to go with PC's. I'm setting up a 40G breeder tank with 4 x 55w PC's (2- 10000K and 2- atinic) I purchased my lights from Hellolights for $240 shipped. That was the best price I found searching all over the net.
