They get big & clumsy. They also do not seem to live long is our warm water reef tanks. Astraea snails do about the same thing but stay smaller and cause less havoc.

The brown algae or diatoms "need" phosphate to form their outer shell. After they form they will feed on other nutrients but if you take the phosphates away, there will be no new diatoms.

I have had the same problem!
I have had my tank since Jan 2006 it is a 46 gallon Bow Front. I bought a cleaner crew. and it seem like it is not helping the problem. I have some live rock in my tank but not the recommened 1 to 2 lbs per gallon of water. I have done a 20% water change and my water is testing alright my PH was 8.2 and my Alk tested within the normal range. I have very min light in this room other then the light on the tank and I fed every other day. Because at first I thought it was because I was over feeding. But I still am not sure what the h??? it is? Anyone else have ideas.

I suggest the first thing to do is keep up on water changes and use some kind of phosphate remover in your filter. If you don't have anything in your tank that requires light turn it off for a day or two. Your fish will be fine. But when you turn your lights back on don't turn them on for the regular amount of time. Start off with about 3hrs for the first few days then 4 and 5 and so on till you reach your regulare light schedual. If you just crank your lights back on the stuff will grow back just as quickly.
