everything died!..starting over

Hello All,
Well 2005 brought me a dead tank...came home from vacation and everything was dead..heater broke and my roomate dipped and didnt feed my fish for 3 weeks like he was supposed to (----!)
So im starting over, its a 10gal nano, cleaned it all out and just put in new LS and LR and waiting for it to cycle. I think I may just want to put one fish in, some crabs & shrimp and keep it simple.
I wanted to know, what fish can I put in a Nano? Im still kind of a rookie. Im tired of clowns & Bi-colors, any suggestions? Puffer maybe? Taking ideas...
ALso, I wanted to put in some crabs and shrimp, how many can I put in in this size tank?
Any ideas would be apreciated
Thanks
SR

think he would eat my "scrimps" and crabs if I added any? I want to put a cleaner shrimp in there, maybe some Peppmt shrimp.
Think I can get away with a starfish?

Don't do a puffer in a 10. How about a couple gobies? I've heard of people keeping sea stars in a 10g, but I don't know which kinds. A lot of them require a well-established tank that's been up for months, so make sure to do your research :). You could probably do one or two shrimp (depending on what kind) and a couple hermits. It may just be me, but I wouldn't want a whole bunch of crabs dominating my tank. :D
I'm also very sorry to hear about your loss. I hope your new tank gets set up quickly!

yeah, it pretty much sucked hard to lose a tank like that, I had two anemonies and a nice little clown, now TOAST..well, gotta move on.
Ive read mixed reviews about puffers. I think I only wantto put in one fish so I want a cool one, any ideas.
Im thinking about putting in a pair of cleaner shrimp, maybe 2-3 peppermint shrinp (since when my tank was alive I had a pretty bad aptasia problem) would a 1" queen conch be ok to put in the tank?

I'd go with two peppermint shrimp so they could be a pair. Queen conchs can get very big. I wouldn't put them in that size of a tank. Scroll down in this thread and you'll see a picture of how big they get: https://www.saltwaterfish.com/vb/show...ht=queen+conch
The problem with a puffer in a 10g is the fact that the smallest ones will get to four inches. A four inch puffer in a 10g tank isn't a good deal at all.
I'm not sure what to tell you, fish wise. You don't have a huge selection of fish for a 10g. Perhaps a Royal Gramma or Firefish?

I still have time to figure all that out since the tanks gotta cycle, I might go get some more LR, I only have 3 lbs in there now, might go get another 3-4 lbs get the cycle going faster
Thanks again for the tips

Tangs are out of the question too, unfortunately. A lot of people won't even put one in a 55. :)

Honestly I cant wait to get a big tank, 55+ moneys the issue however. Nanos are a pain
Ive got 1 9watt 5000k Actinic blue & same strength daylight. What can I get coral/mushroom/zoo wise with this ammt of light?
sorry about all the questions, feel free not to answer hehe, I just want to get a cool tank going again.
Thx,

Your lights won't be enough for any coral. Sorry to keep bursting your bubble, lol. I'm not hugely knowledgeable on the subject of lights, but I do know enough to know you'd need a lot more light than that.
I'm running out of ideas for fish. This may just be me, but I think Black Clown Gobies are the coolest little fish. They only grow to an inch and a half, so you'd be able to put another fish in your tank should you get one. Go here if you'd like to see what they look like:

i have a 2 inch long sharp nosed puffer i aquired from a friend in a eclipse 12.
he fits fine, and seems to be happy, but he's such a sloppy eater that the tank is constantly dirty. i wouldnt suggest one unless you want a dirty tank constanly. im going to be selling him to the lfs soon unless the girl that gave him to me wants him back by any chance

So your saying you had 2 anemones under 18 watss of light. Thats not nearly enough. And a puffer is a deffinient no for a 10g tank.

Stupid question here,
Whats a CUBE??
I have a 75G but I really want a nano, so I came here for info.
My 2 cents about a puffer in a 10G, NO WAY... Sorry. As someone said here, they are messy eaters and water quality may be an issue. Also, he will eat inverts. =( sorry.
Thanking you kindly, Kim

Hiya,
I think it's called a nano cube. It's a set up that has everything to start a SW aquarium in. I forget how many gallons it is.

yeah, I had a Big pink tipped anemone that split into a smaller one, they did fine, ate alot of brine shrimp cubes that I fed to my clown. I actually bought the tank from a guy who had it for 6 years before I did with the same lights.
I've given up on the puffer idea, thinking i'd go with a firefish, black clown goby or I may look into a 6 line wrasse, arent they a bit to agresive for a small tank like that?
Thaks for the input ;)

question for you guys...
I had a BAD problem w/ glass anemones in my tank before everything died. I cleaned it all out and put in the new sand and rock etc. Today I saw a little tine Glass Anemones on the LR.
Can I put in Joes Juice while Im cycling the tank? or should I wait untill its set up in about a month.

Thanks for the "cube answer"... I keep seeing the 12G complete set ups mentioned on the boards. (?eclipes?) I think that they are cool BUT you wouldnt want one for a nano reef because the lighting and the filter system is connected to the hood and thats a problem keeping corals.
I am concidering a 2 gallon, that would be cool!
Also, as far as your glass anemome's, i used a small syringe and blasted it with hot (close to boiling)water alone and I also have used a mix of hot water and kalkwasser. You put the syringe right into it or its hole and GET IT! It wont bother your tank with such a small amount but will get rid of them instantly. Also works great on Aptaisia.
Thanking you Kindly, Kim :notsure:

Hiya,
I never had any problem with my six line. Except he wiped out my flat worm population then died :(
I had him with a scooter, peppermint shrimp and some emerald crabs. Never was agressive to anything else. If you're only wanting one fish you wouldn't have to worry about aggression anyway.
Mine was in a 37 gallon eclipse.
Also, my peppermint shrimp took care of my anenomies and emeralds my bubble algea.
