Evil looking crab. What is it?

I noticed this guy in my reef tank a month or more ago. I have been recently noticing mushrooms getting shredded, could it be from this crab?

there are many thousands upon thousands of crab species, most are still not even named in science. this is one, and judging by its black pointy claws, its an opportunistic feeder. this crab is 98% very aggressive and not reef safe in any way. pop it in the fuge.

the black pointy claws is a give away that if its hungry and wants to eat something. its gonna give it a try fish, inverts, anything

I don't think that's a gorilla crab since it's legs don't appear to be fuzzy. It might be some sort of mithrax, though whatever it is, I definitely agree that it will likely attack something in your tank. The claws are a giveaway, they're meant for more than just picked at algae.

I figured he's bad. I haven't seen him kill anything but that doesn't mean he didn't. I'll put him in the 40gal "Bad boy" tank. I know it could be impossible to ID this crab 100% since coloring may vary throughout one species, but if anyone has one with coloring like this guy let me know. I'd like to find more info on him but my search has been pretty much dry.

If you need to know, I'm almost positive there's a marine science lab near Groton (I haven't lived in Ct. for a long time) and I would think they'd ID it for you. If not, there's always Wood's Hole!

That's a good idea! Too much effort for me though, LOL! At least he'll look good in the evil tank!

It's a part of Newtown in the Danbury area. Let me know if the person you know can ID the crab! Thanks!

Took 3 hours but I got him out and into the other tank! Hopefully the mushrooms will be fine now.
