Excessive waterflow?

I second paulcoates on that one. The AquaClears are awesome, and the Penguins are very powerful and not too expensive, so you get the bang for your buck. I've never used Rios, but IMO, stay away from Powersweeps. They are wonderful for freshwater aquariums, and the concept is great for saltwater, however, it seems that the motor gets corroded by the salt and the "sweeper" stops sweeping after about a month or less.

You guys really seem to know what your talkin about so I wanted to snaek a question in if I may. My tank is 37gl reef, 2weeks old. I have a mag drive 500 pump for my wet dry filter and a 350mag canister filter also. Do you think this is to much water flow? i wanted awesome filtration thats why I went with both, but I am concerned there is to much flow. :notsure:

The 350mag canister puts out around 350gph and the mag 500 puts out around 310gph so together you have 660gph. In a 37g tank that is 17.8x per-hour. I would say you're in good shape.

Guess everyone has preferences on powerheads. I personally have had great luck with the seio's and the tunze's. A bit more costly but works well for my setup. As far as too much flow I have seen sps tanks flourishing with turnover rates at x30 so it also partially depends on your goals with the tank. I keep my tank at x25 rate so the softies dont get too upset w/me :)

Thankyou everyone for all of your help, I just went to my lfs and purchased a Rio 2100. I appreciate everyones suggestions on which powerhead to buy, I wish I could have tried your suggested P/H's but I have 7 mo twins and am on a budget with my tank. Currently I have the two Rio 600's, and the 2100 running in the tank, Is there any way I can position them so it doesnt disrupt the sand so much?
And how do you figure the turnover rate in your tank?

turnover rate is simply the gph your powerheads push then divide it by the gallons in your tank. example (cause my tank is easy to figure out things on ;)
tank is 100gal
total output from powerheads, pumps etc: 2500 gph
so 2500/100=25 :)
FYI one perk of the seio's and tunze's is a wide dispersion head, aka you dont get that narrow beam that blows sand around so much. If you need more ph in the future seio's if you look around can be had for a pretty decent price, I paid 34 bucks each. Tunze's, yeah are pricey.
congrats on the twins
