Experience with Hamilton VHO Systems?

Well I am in the planning mode for building my canopy for the 120. I was thinking of using a Hamilton VHO system for my lighting with two vho on that. And also using two actinics, not sure what to do with that yet. So I am looking for people who haved used this product and your opinion. Also, anybody have suggestions on 4" cooling fans, is there any differences in them at all, or are they all pretty much the same?

I have used the 48" 220-watt Hamilton VHO system before and was very pleased with it. It runs cool and puts out very good light with 1 Actinic and 1 AquaSun. The only thing I wasn't too excited about is the fact that the on/off button is on the ballast, which means if you don't use a timer you have to be able to reach the ballast to turn the lights on/off. Other than that, I was very pleased. Also, unless you keep your house very warm, you will not need a cooling fan, as the ballasts are remote located(near the plug, not the hood) and will not heat your canopy up very much. HTH

mmslue79,
Sorry, I've never used nor seen the Hamilton set up you've described.
I did recently buy and installed the PFO 4 x 110watt 48 inch VHO retro kit, that includes;
(1) Remote Ballast w/ 2 on-off switches & 4 quick disconnect plug slots.
(8) Three piece end caps, prewired with four 8 feet quick disconnect plugs.
(2) 48" URI Super Actinic 110 watt VHO bulbs
(2) 48" URI Aquasuns 110 watt VHO bulbs
440 watts VHO total
You could get all of this for $269.55 + shipping
Was very easy to install and works great.
If you're interested, let me know, I can give you more details.
If not, I understand and wish you luck with the Hamilton's.

The one thing I'll mention is that the 4 lamp ballast is pretty big, compared to electronic ( Ice Cap ) type ballasts.
If you have room for it - it's fine.
It gets warm - I wouldn't say hot - but warm to the touch.
I chose to get the digital integral timers installed in the ballast as well.
Little more money - but I thought was a nice feature.
The ballast dimensions are 21"L x 5"W x 3"H
Here's a pic - the VHO ballast w/timers is the white one on the left.

Was there a particular reason you choose the PFO ballast over the Hellolights electronic ballast other than the dual switching capabilities?
PFO is more expensive, more bulky and produces more heat ?
Just curious,
Thanks

Yeah slowest is fastest,
There were several reasons.
As you said, I wanted individual control on two banks of lights.
Actinics to come on at a predetermined time, followed by either the Aquasun's or the 50/50's at a later time.
Same in reverse for dusk simulation.
I'm pulling a lot of amps at this wall recepticle/circuit.
I didn't want everything to fire up at once.
The Hellolight package is wired in series - I've messed around enough with strings of Christmas tree lights, looking for the problem, to keep me from doing that on my reef tank lighting.
The PFO is plug-n-play. You can switch plugs around, run lights in combinations as you choose, and that seemed better to me.
You can't easily work on a "potted" seal electronic ballast, to troublshoot or replace separate components.
I went with PFO for my MH system - and liked what I read about them.
I liked the integral timers - same price adder as if I went to Home Depot - and they're wired into the ballast already. Save me some time and clean appearance.
I appreciated the help and service I got from the "vendor" up front during my presale telephone converstations.
I planned to build a wood cabinet for the MH ballast anyway - so the additional length was of little concern.
That's pretty much why.

I have ran from PFO in the past maybe their product has gotten better as well as the customer service. Perhaps it is time to give them another look.
Thanks
SiF
