expired test kit

i use kent liquid reactor as a calcium additive in my tank. when i used this new test kit (api) that i bought it showed only 300. so for the past week ive been adding the calcium. still has not come up one bit. day before yesterday i got a film on top of my water. i have 2 of my powerheads stirring the surface and they couldnt keep it off. so i got to looking at my test kit and the expiration date is may 2007. i called the test kit company and the guy told me it should still work just fine. what do you guys think?

I think API kits suck even if new. I'd get it doublechecked with another brands test.

I agree, API sucks. I had their KH test kit reading 16 dKH when my KH actually dropped down to 6 dKH.

Well you're going to get a film anytime you add a bunch of chemicals at once without knowing the levels of each.. The kent reactor is much more than just calcium, its also includes magnesium , strontium,alkalinity and buffering supplement..
chill out on dosing, do a Large water change and retest-.. this time check for alk, ph, magnesium too.
i recomend better test kits such as Sali..

yep salifert always worked for me as well.
i know they are a little more but they last for usually a year.
