Extra Filter???

I was wondering is it good or bad to "overkill" on filters?
And what would be a better supplemental filter?
I have a 60 gallon FOWLR (and I am going to start a 90G FOWLR).
I was am using a canister filter for the main filteration, and of course a protein skimmer.
I was debating between a "power filter, w/ bio wheel" or a "internal canister filter"?
Which would be a better combo, or is it money not worth spending?
Any opinions?

When I started my tank (50g) I was using a 350gph canister filter, switching between micron filter and carbon, a protein skimmer, live rock, DSB, and a penguin 330 biowheel(s). I kept the canister running for about 3 months, then removed the canister filter. I noticed that since I removed the canister filter my nitrates have dropped from an average of 15 to 5ppm. A considerable drop.
Now I just run the Penguin 330 with my protein skimmer and powerheads. I use the canister to run carbon a couple of times a month. Works great, nitrates are down. Oh, I also have 70lbs of LR.
