Extra Shells for Hermits

I recently picked up some extra shells for my hermits from SWF. When they got here, the odor was asphyxiating. I had read that soaking them in a closed container of sea water would do the trick.
No luck. I then read where boiling them would cleanse them. Is this the proper thing to do?
Any other suggestions?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thx.

Hi Dizzy:
My kids and I went for a walk on the beach last week and found alot of empty snail shells. We washed them and Boiled them in water for 10 minutes and threw them in our tank. We have 5 blue legs and 5 scarlets. It is so much fun every morning to see who has moved into a new shell. It's like musical chairs!
Anyway...it's been a week and all is well with the crabs.

If you are worried about it- boiling them is not going to hurt anything at all....
I put in extra shell's all the time, but my scarlets prefer to kill my snails...
It gets frustrating.....

If you have regular turbos they are probably just dying anyway. Try trochus snails they are a lor hardier and clean a lot better.
