Extreme Brown Algae Outbreak

I just started school recently and I haven’t had as much time as I did during the summer to micro manage my tanks. In one of my tanks the brown algae had gotten out of control so since I didn’t have any fish in it I just turned the light off and left it off for about 2 weeks and all of the algae was gone! Well I have another ten gallon with the worst outbreak I have ever seen (even on the rocks and the floating thermometer!!!) Would it be safe to just leave the lights off till I can get some snails? Will this have any adverse effects on my fish????? The only thing I could think of is that if I had any coral line on the rocks it would die, but alas the brown has already killed it all.

As long as you don't have something that needs good light, like an anemone or coral you should be fairly okay.
