Extremely loud overflow & flow problem

I have recently installed a new circulation pump (iwaki 55RLT). I used to have the lifegard quiet one. My tank is a 120g long with a custom sea life sump. The overflow is external with 2 - 1" outputs. I now have two issues. First, the overflow does not seem to be able to handle the pump. I believe that the overflow should be able to handle 1400 gph. I had to add a third "U" tube in the overflow box. This sort of handled the flow problem but I should not have to have the 3rd "U" tube. The second problem is that my overflow is so loud that it is unbearable. I have tried to make new standpipes as instructed in a thread on this site: (http://home.att.net/~rstockman/overflow.htm) but it still does not seem to work. I am not sure what level the top of these new standpipes need to sit inside the overflow box. Any advice is greatly appreciated. I believe that it was glazer that had the post with this standpipe design so if you are reading please help. Thanks in advance.

1400 gph is about dead on max rate for 1" overflows. As far as noise try building durso stand pipes for it.

there is a very easy fix that can work almost instanly ( i needed to use i on my tank.) all you do is drill a hole into the top of the piece of plastic that the prefilter sits on then take airline tubing (a true aquarium freak would have some laying around.) and slide it into the hole. then move the tube up and down untill the noise goes away. my sugestion would be to start with a very long piece and make it go all the way to the sump then sloooooowwwwwwwllllllyyyyyyy pull it out:D

wickedwes,
What brand is the overflow? You didn't happen to buy it from a guy on ----, did you?
What I believe Joerdie is saying is take small airline tubing (ie. tubing you would connect to an air pump...can buy it at home depot or lowes for cheap) and put it down the pipes that takes water to your sump. When you find the spot where the air is being trapped in your pipes, you'll get rid of the sucking or toilet flushing noise. You're basically letting the air escape out of the pipe, or 'burping' it by letting the air out through the small tubing! :)
Hope that helps some....
PS Durso pipe didn't work on my overflow box either. Mine was too slimlined and when I tried to use smaller parts, it didn't quite cut it.

cut back on the flow rate there is too much water going thru the sys.you dont need high volume of water to accomplish filtration
