Falling Branch Kills Baby in NYC's Central Park
NEW YORK --
A 6-month-old baby was killed Saturday and her mother injured by a falling tree branch at New York's Central Park Zoo.
Police said the 33-year-old New Jersey woman was posing with her baby in front of the sea lion exhibit and her husband was taking their picture when the branch fell.
The woman and infant were taken to NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, where the baby was pronounced dead. The mother was listed in stable condition.
Police identified the baby as Gianna Ricciutti of Union City, N.J.
Max Pulsinelli, a spokesman for the Wildlife Conservation Society, which runs the zoo, said he could not comment on the accident beyond what the police had said.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family," he said.
It's the second fatality caused by a tree branch this year at Central Park.
A 46-year-old man died in February when a branch heavy from snow fell and hit him.
In July 2009, a Google engineer was knocked unconscious after being hit on the head by a rotted tree branch at the park.

And now all these parks advocates are coming out and saying that the City should hire a few hundred people to go through every tree in the city to make sure that no branch can ever fall on another child.
Seriously, it was a tragedy that a 6 month old died from this, but get real... Its an act of nature and an accident.

Yeah but the city is responsible for the maintenance of the trees. If a healthy branch blows of a tree that is one thing but if gravity takes it's toll on a dead rotting branch that is their responsibility. I am reasonably certain the city has people on staff already to look after the trees.

I agree. Act of nature. Are we going to blame the city if the grass is too high and we receive a grass-cut above our sock level? Things happen. Very unfortunate situation of course but certainly not news worthy or something that demands blame on anyone.

Central Park in NYC has an annual budget of $600,000 to take care of the trees. They are saying that the branch that fell was full of leaves and was not dead or rotting.
Again, very said story, but sometimes accidents happen.

if a tree falls on a baby does it make a noise? okay okay to much to soon.
This is almost as bad as that woman joggin on the beach and got struck by lightning. Boom dead. It happens. When its your time to die. You will die. Nobody is too blame when something like this happens. Freak accident. People wanna blame somebody for everything.

And don't try to cheat death...we learned that on 'Final Destination'........based on a true story.

sometimes...it's kinda funny how things turn...
....I posted a story about a tragedy for a family...nothing about placing blame or suing, or responsibility.....just an awful thing that these people are going thru.....
I just thought we could say a prayer for the loss this family has suffered
sorry if I seem a tad "blue" today is the 3rd anniversary of my son (step-son's) death....he was 25, and is sorely missed every minute of every day :(
R.I.P. Anthony.....I love you and miss you
